The 113th Congress’s record-setting number of women representatives is an inspiration to many Americans that gender inequality in Washington is slowly declining.
First time I’ve seen the word pictograph since middle school math.
Throw pillows! Snuggle up with the Senate! Fill your house with the House!
This first one, featuring my watercolor portrait of Rep. Michele Bachmann is kind of creepy, kind of wonderful, and likely the strangest thing I’ve ever made. I’ll be adding more posters and pillows soon.
Bring the women home!
I’ve just set up a Society6 page to feature the Women of the 112th and 113th. Click on over to society6.com/Womenofthe113th to get art prints, framed, or canvas versions of the women of Congress.
I’ve started with the infographic that everyone’s been buzzing about (including HuffPo this afternoon), but more coming soon! I’ve got plans to make throw pillows (“Get cozy with the Congress”).
And thanks for supporting my art, both on the internet and by buying the real deal. If you don’t see what you want up at the store, send me a request.
The All In with Chris Hayes team puts out a daily call to the Twitter and Facebook communities for the “awesomest things” they encountered on the Internet.
Super stoked that my infographic made it all the way to MSNBC and Chris Hayes (second coolest thing on the internet).
Correction! Apologies to Krysten Sinema, and thanks to ackacked. Sharp eyeballs!
ackacked asked:
I don't mean to be rude or anything but on the picture showing the women of the 113th distributed by state you have Kyrsten Sinema in New Mexico when she's representing Arizona's 9th district.
I’m so embarrassed! Thanks for the correction. Fixed infographic coming shortly…
A cheerfully illustrated guide to the 113th Congress’ shocking gender disparityThe Women of the 113th are on the homepage of Salon.com right now! Check it.
Public voting for Looking@Democracy ends 5/16 at 3pm. There’s 63K of you, which makes for quite the voting bloc!
Interesting deet: out of 374 entries about contemporary democracy in America, only four feature women’s issues.
catfacemeowmers asked:
Who does your awesome portraits?
Heyo, Emily Nemens does the illustrations.
More info on her here.
Thanks for liking the ladies!
Happy Mother’s Day!
A big shout out to all the moms in Congress, and to working moms everywhere (especially my mom, who recently retired after nearly 40 years as a RN). Thank you for everything you do, and for setting an awesome example for us all.
Notes: (1) doesn’t include stepkids, (2) Jaime Herrera Beutler is pregnant (3) new Congresswoman Gloria Negrete-McLeod has ten kids.
